"So let the world be, still by the sea", the first man said, when he arrived here. He might as well have said, "these are the green fingers of heaven, the maps of a made-up flight of the birds above the sea, the river, the bays that slowly spread out almost until the infinite". As if the infinite would not last more than the moment when the man first beheld the distance. And beholding the distance he would be here though, on this spot where anything would still be possible as if it were paradise and as if paradise were a so beautiful and almost perfect place that it would still be unbearable.
