"I love the river. I have always loved it, since childhood, the river of my childhood and the river of today, so far away, for it was the river that situated me in the world, in my little world, beginning in the morning, when I opened the bedroom window and breathed the exquisite aromas of the honeysuckle and the linden tree. The linden must have been very leafy, like all the lindens that accompany our life from the early years till much later, when our memories are sweet and tender, because we eliminate those that, hurting us, seem like incarnations of evil. Even if the words are not quite right, as they almost never are, the linden remains, proving the existence of childhood and of the angels that inhabited its innocence. It’s still there, leafy as ever, exuding a warm and savoury fragrance, projecting on to the weed-covered ground its shade from a distant summer hovering over that river that I love and have always loved, and will love as long as I live."
